GRANVILLE, Ohio – For freshman Emily Hilt, Sunday marked a first in her young Crusader career while toppling many individual events accomplishments. Hilt took part in her first pentathlon as part of the two-week All-Ohio Championships, in which she toppled multiple personal records and finished second overall.
The pentathlon is collection of events that each individual is scored on, which include: the 60-meter hurdles, high jump, shot put, long jump, and 800-meter dash. After the one-day event, Delaware, Ohio (Buckeye Valley) native Emily Hilt represented Capital with a second-place finish out of four female competitors, totaling 2,557 points.
Hilt won an event, toppled two personal records, matched a third, and set the bar in one event she had not run previously en route to jumping inside the top five among Capital's program bests in the pentathlon.
Hilt's lone win came in the high jump, which also marked one of the events in which she set a new PR. Her leap of 1.55 meters (5-1) netted her a first-place finish in the event and 678 points toward her total score.
The freshman was consistently competitive, which kept her in the running for her second place overall finish. She matched her personal best in the long jump at 4.66 meters (15-3) and despite placing third, was just 0.01 meters off the pace of the second-place finisher, Mary Lauletta from Kenyon College. With her nipping at the heels of her competition all day long, her event win made the difference in edging out Lauletta for second place in the multi-event championship.
Hilt's second PR was set in the 800-meter dash, where she bested her previous top time by more than 13 seconds. She placed third but timed out at 2:57.44.
In her first crack at the 60-meter hurdles, Hilt placed third overall with a time of 10.50 seconds, just 0.50 seconds off the pace of the event winner.
Hilt was 101 points in front of Lauletta of Kenyon, while Emily Brown of Ohio Wesleyan University took top honors with 2,772 points overall. For her finish, Hilt earned eight points which will be counted towards the Capital women's track & field team's total score at next weekend's full All-Ohio Championship at Otterbein University's Rike Center (Westerville, Ohio).
