The Georgia Highlands College Baseball team began their three game series with Shorter University this week needing just 2 wins to establish a new program record for wins in a season. First year head coach Dash O’Neill’s squad was more than up to the task, sweeping the Hawks in the series and reaching the 30 win mark for the first time in program history. Remarkably, the score in all three games was identical, as the Chargers rolled to 10-0 victories in each contest. This also marks the first time a Georgia Highlands team has ever shut out an opponent in all three games of a three game series, and GHC scored their 311th run on the season – another new program record.
With 12 games remaining, the Chargers have already established new standards in 8 different team categories (wins, CGs, runs, RBIs, SB, HBP, RCS, and SAC flies), with new individual single season records already falling in RBIs (38, Jon White and Matt Vaccaro), SB (20, Bronco O’Brien), wins (6, Matt Norton and Colby Taylor), CGs (3, Drew Wilson), SAC bunts (7, Devin Bilardello), SAC flies (8, Devin Bilardello), and HBP (14, Jon White). This is in addition to program firsts and other records that are too numerous to mention here.
Against Shorter, Tyler Sellers, Sean Fitzpatrick, and Jake Lovvorn receive credit for wins on the mound, while Jonathan White, Brandon Bell, Devin Bilardello, and Josh Kiser each homered in the series. The Chargers tallied 32 hits and 11 stolen bases in the series while allowing just 6 hits and 1 walk with 16 strikeouts in the series. The wins put the Chargers at 30-14 heading into the final three weeks of the season. GHC will travel to Tifton next Tuesday to play ABAC before hosting the Stallions next weekend in a pivotal GCAA series at home. First pitch Tuesday is at 6PM in Tifton, with Friday’s game also set for 6PM at LakePoint. Saturday’s doubleheader will begin at 1PM at LakePoint.
