Defensive Errors Prove Costly as Lady Chargers Swept by Southern Union

            The Georgia Highlands College Lady Chargers traveled down to Southern Union Community College to take on the Lady Bison for a Sunday afternoon double-header.

The bats were hot for the Lady Chargers as they scored five unanswered runs through the first two innings. Those runs remained unanswered until the bottom of the fifth inning when the Lady Bison scored seven runs. 

 Despite outhitting the Lady Bison nine to five the Lady Chargers dropped game on of the double-header with a score of 7-5. Alexis Davis, Lacey Rutledge, and Taryn Hitchcock connected for multiple hits in the contest. Izzy Marcotte and Deyonce Lewis also added an RBI a piece, Hitchcock added three RBIs. 

Madalynn Morton started out on the mound for the Lady Chargers throwing four innings. She allowed five hits, six runs (three earned runs), and three walks. Montana Ledbetter threw two innings allowing one run, two walks, while striking out four.

In game two, Taryn Hitchcock opened up the scoring for the Lady Chargers blasting a solo shot over the left field fence. Southern Union answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the frame, and the Lady Chargers answered again with a run at the top of the second. This run remained unanswered until the bottom of the third when the Lady Bison scored five runs. A late seventh inning rally resulted in just a run short as the Lady Chargers fell 6-5 to the Lady Bison in game two.

Taryn Hitchock led the offense for the Lady Chargers tallying three hits in four at bats with two RBIs. Lacey Rutledge also added two RBIs, and Deyonce Lewis added an RBI as well.

Maggie Schandera started in the circle, she threw for three innings allowing six hits and six runs with only one of those being an earned run. Schandera also had two strikeouts in the outing. Montana Ledbetter came in as relief throwing three innings, striking out six of the ten batters she faced.

The Lady Chargers are back in action Tuesday, February 25th at home against the Cougars of Cleveland State Community College weather permitting. The double-header contest will take place at Star’s field at 2:00 and 4:00 PM.
