The Lady Chargers entered the last week of the regular season having secured the 2-seed in the upcoming GCAA tournament, but the team was coming of a heartbreaking loss to conference leader South Georgia Tech. They were looking to build momentum heading into the postseason.
On Monday, GHC hosted last-place Southern Crescent Technical College in a make-up game originally scheduled for January 5. SCTC was winless in the conference and only able to dress 5 players. This allowed Coach Harrell to rest some of his regular starters and get valuable minutes for the reserves. Of the six Lady Chargers to see action, four scored in double-digits to lead GHC to an easy 82-43 victory over the visitors. Ja’Lyn Reese led the way with 34 points, including 6-9 from 3-point range. Janee Knorr put up 20 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Jalicia Bass had 10 points and 10 rebounds, while Lucy Threlfall added 10 points and 5 rebounds.
On Wednesday, the Lady Chargers went on the road to Albany Technical College in their last game of the GCAA regular season. Behind 23 points and 7 rebounds from Tynasia Bunting, GHC was able to cruise to an comfortable 72-46 victory over the home team. Ja’Lyn Reese had another good game for the Lady Chargers with 17 points and 11 rebounds. O’Mariyah Tucker added 14 points and 8 rebounds, while Nijeria Jordan chipped in 10 to round out the double-digit scorers for GHC.
Saturday saw the team host a very good Lawson State Community College team in the regular season finale. The score stayed close for most of the contest. After trailing 10-14 at the end of the 1st quarter, GHC was able to fight back to trail by only one, 24-25 at the half. The 3rd quarter saw things continue to stay close but with the Lady Chargers able to grab a 41-40 lead going into the final period. The first few minutes of the 4th quarter saw the teams exchange baskets as the game looked to stay close to the end. However, the Lady Chargers were able to hit their shots down the stretch while ramping up the defense. When the final buzzer sounded, GHC had prevailed 67-59. Jahnaria Brown led the way with 22 points and 10 rebounds. Tynasia Bunting added 14 points and 9 rebounds. Nijeria Jordan (13) and Ja’Lyn Reese (10) rounded out the leading scorers for GHC. Sandra Lin had a good game from the point with 6 assists.
The wins are a good momentum-builder heading into next weekend’s GCAA tournament and bring the Lady Chargers record to 20-9 overall and 15-3 in the GCAA. All three of those losses came to the 1-seed, South Georgia Tech. The ladies will need to play well to bring home a GCAA title and a trip to the NJCAA National Tournament. Those games will be streamed on JockJive. We will share out tournament and streaming information on all GHC platforms when it is available.
