Pitching, Timely Hitting LEad to a 4-1 week for GHC

It was a busy week for the Charger Baseball team as the orange and blue played 5 games in as many days and came away with 4 wins.

The week opened on Wednesday night when the Chargers jumped out to an early 4-0 lead only to find themselves in a dogfight late in the game.  Jacob Ryan was electric through 5 innings before Cleveland State put 4 runs together on some free passes issued by the GHC bullpen to tie the game and make things interesting.  A 4 run Charger rally in the 8th capped by a 2 RBI single by Mickey Maguire put the game out of reach.  Ryan Smithson came on to toss two perfect frames to end the game and earn the win.

On Thursday, the Chargers played host to Lake Land College and pitching took center stage.  The GHC staff tossed a pair of shutouts and allowed only 8 hits in 14 innings while the offense rolled out 16 unanswered runs.  Conner Perry and Griffin Brown combined for the shutout in game 1 while Chase Townsend, Mason List, and Trace Twardoski provided an encore performance in the nightcap.  Gavin Harmon mashed 5 hits, Twardoski racked up 4, Palmer Sapp pounded out 3, and Omar Daniels drove in 5 runs to lead the offense.

The week wrapped up with a twinbill against Three Rvers Community College on Sunday.  Temperatures below freezing and a strong pitching held the Chargers to just 3 runs on 4 hits in the game 1, and despite another excellent performance by Ethan Underwood and a late push by the offense, GHC lost 4-3.  Game 2 started slow, but the weather warmed and so did the Charger bats.  Johnny Dow was superb, holding TRCC to 3 runs and David Smith, Gavin Harmon, and Joe Sutton each drove in a pair of runs in the 6-3 victory.  Jet Kern came on in the final frame to collect his 4th save of the season.

The action for the week sets GHC's record to 14-4 on the season.  They will host Point University in a 1PM DH at Lakepoint on Wednesday.
