Melissa Wood started the program in 2012 and has found much success both on the field and in the classroom.  Entering her sixth year at the helm, Wood has guided the Chargers to five straight NJCAA Regional appearances and a program best Region XVII Tournament Finish in 2018 when the Chargers finished 2nd.  The Chargers broke the win record in 2017 with 43 in a season, and boasted two NJCAA All-Americans in Andria Booth and Brianna Fickes (NJCAA, NFCA, FPN) and the Region XVII Most Valuable Player (Booth).  

In five years, the Chargers have had 32 All-Region Selections, 9 All-Tournament Team Selections, 5 NFCA All-Southeastern Region Selections, one conference MVP Selection, one Flo Softball Top-100 athlete, one Fastpitch News Offensive All-American, one NFCA All-American, and two NJCAA All-Americans.  The Chargers have had 18 players sign National Letters-of-Intent to NCAA DI, DII, DII, or NAIA Insititutions.

Academically, the Chargers have finished above a 3.00 cumulative team GPA all five years, good enough for NJCAA All-Academic Team Honors.  The Chargers have earned over 37 academic honors including: 9 Academic All-Region Members, 12 NFCA Academic All-Americans, 11 NJCAA Academic All-Americans, 3 Phi Theta Kappa Team Georgia Scholar Athletes, and 2 Arthur Ashe, Jr. Scholar-Athletes.  

Wood is 156-111 (0.584) in five years and 69-39 (0.639) in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association.  

Wood previously worked at North Idaho College from 2011-2012 and helped start the program at Berry College during it's inaugural season in 2009 to 2012 where she graduated with a Master's Degree in Education.  Wood graduated from the University of Georgia in 2009 where she recieved a Bachelor's Degree in Sociology.

Wood played softball for Florida State University from 2005-2006 and was a member of the #16 ranked team in 2006 when they advanced to the NCAA DI Super-Regionals.  In 2005 Wood was named to the ACC 2nd Team and also recieved the FSU Co-Rookie of the Year Award as a catcher.  In 2007, Wood transfered to the University of Georgia where she played two seasons for the Georgia Bulldogs. Wood advanced again to the NCAA DI World Series with the #12 Ranked Bulldogs in 2008 and was named to the SEC All-Community Service Team.  Wood led the bulldogs in RBI's in 2007 (43), Total Bases in 2008 (35), Sac Flies in 2008 4),  and Homeruns in 2008 (11), and she currently is in the record books for the following categories: #3 Career Fielding Percentage (2007-2008, 0.992), #9 Career Record in Walk-to-Strikeout Ratio (2007-2008, 1.06 54BB/51K), #10 Season Record Putouts (2008, 426), #9 Career Putouts (2007-2008, 832).  Wood was also a member of the 2007 SEC All-Academic Team.

Wood is one of 17 Georgia Bulldogs to play in the Professional Circuit when she played for the Dornbirn Sharx in Austria.  Wood helped the Sharx to the two highest Europen Cup Finishes in 2008, when the Sharx Finished 2nd in Prague, CZ Republic and 2009 when the Sharx won 1st Place, the first Gold Medal at the Europen Cup for Austria in Legnano, Italy.  Wood was also named the Most Valuable Player in 2008 after hitting 0.480 with five homeruns and 14 RBI's.  

At Georgia Highlands College, Melissa currently works as an academic advisor for our baseball and softball teams, as well as a part-time faculty in the Health & Phsycial Education Department.  Wood has also served at the school as the intramural director (2012-2015) and the Nursing Advisor (2015-2016).  Wood lives in Lawrenceville, Georgia and is currently finishing her second Master's in Kinisiology where she has already accumulated over 18 credit hours of coursework.
