Softball Splits with Southern Union in Tuesday Night Matchup

The Chargers took on the Lady Bison of Southern Union in their home opener on Tuesday. After two hard fought games, they came away with a split.

Chargers took game one with a final score of 10-7. Taking an early lead in the first inning, Southern Union got on the board with 1 run after a base hit from Bailei Bacchus. The scoring for the Chargers began in the second inning where the they plated 4 after Annsley Todd, Haley Robinson, Allison Deweese, and Malone Aldridge each drove in runs.

The Chargers plate 1 more in the third inning off the bat of Hailey Cronic, who doubles to score Madison Dennis. Cronic went 4-4 for in the game with two singles and two doubles.

Emma Veitch got the start on the mound in the home opener going just three and two-thirds innings. Veitch allowed seven hits and seven runs while striking out one.

Veitch was able to hold the Bison two just 1 run until trouble brewed in the fourth inning. Southern Union scored 6 runs to take a 7-5 lead. With two outs, Gracee Ellis entered the game to complete the inning giving up 0 earned runs.

The Chargers are able to make a come-back, scoring 3 more runs in the fifth and 2 more in the sixth inning, with a final score of 10-7.

Game two was a heartbreaker as the Chargers were unable to hold on to an early lead, ending the game with an 11-3 defeat. The early lead began with a walk by Haley Robinson to score 1 run. A fielder’s choice off the bat of Malone Aldridge plated one more run in the bottom of the first for the Chargers.

The Lady Bison scored 1 in the third, 2 in the fourth, and 8 runs in the fifth inning. The Chargers would only plate one more run in the bottom of the 5th after a ground ball out to the first baseman plates Madison Dennis.

Maggie Schandera got the start on the mound for the Chargers allowing 3 hits and 2 runs over three innings and striking out 2. Katie Traynor, Gracee Ellis, and Emma Veitch each toed the rubber in relief of game two.
