Chargers Win Region 17 Championship on Athens Hudson's Walk Off Home Run!
Georgia Highlands College Softball won their first ever NJCAA Region 17 Title Saturday in dramatic fashion. After Emily Ferro held off the offense of #1 seed Georgia Military for two days in a row, the Chargers carried a 3-2 lead into the last inning. With one out in the top of the seventh, GMC centerfielder tied the game with a home run. Ferro and the Chargers held firm, locking the score at 3-3 heading into the bottom of the seventh. Athens Hudson, who had already homered earlier in the game, stepped up to the plate and deposited a 1-0 pitch over the left field wall to send the Bulldogs packing and the Chargers to their first ever Mid-Atlantic District Championship.
The Chargers stormed through the bracket, defeating Gordon State in the opener 5-0. Emily Ferro tossed the first of three gems on the week, shutting out the Highlanders. Ferro was also one of three Chargers to record multiple hits in the game, while Mary Catherine Kimball drove in two runners in the game.
GHC would face the top seed in the semi finals after struggling againt GMC during the regular season. Twirling another gem, Emily Ferro went the distance again and only allowed a single run on 4 hits. Emma Darrow, Emmalee Freeman, and Ahmani Green led the 4 run attack with two hits and an RBI each. Anslee Logan drove in a run as well, and the Chargers claimed a spot in the championship game out of the winner's bracket.
In the final, Ferro was once again on her game and once again went the distance. She claimed all three victories in the circle, and though the Chargers only scatted four hits in the game, they all came at the right times. Anslee Logan scored on an error and then drove in a run on a sacrifice fly in the 5th to get GHC on the scoreboard, and Hudson's first home run gave the Chargers a 3-2 lead. Hudson's second bomb of the afternoon set off the celebration.
The Chargers will advance to the Mid -Atlantic District Championship next week. Check our website and socials for game times and details.
