Lady Chargers Grab Big Comeback Win

The Lady Chargers continued the trend of playing strong non-conference opponents when they hosted the Chattahoochee Valley Community College Lady Pirates on Saturday at the Corral.

The first half did not go the way of the home team. Chattahoochee Valley came out firing, shooting almost 60% for the half, including over 70% in the second quarter. Behind 21 first-half points from Alycia Reese, including 4-4 from behind the arc, the Lady Pirates built a 12-point halftime lead.

Coach Harrell made the right adjustments at the half because the Ladies came out strong in the 3rd quarter. GHC's defense was able to hold the Lady Pirates to 24% shooting in the 3rd quarter. Chattahoochee also would not hit a three-pointer in the second half. The Lady Chargers were able to outscore the visitors 25-11 to take a 2-point lead into the 4th. After an even 4th quarter, the Chargers came away with an 82-79 victory.

Nijeria Jordan (24) and Ja'Lyn Reese (20) led the scoring for GHC. Jahnaria Brown put up her second double-double in a row with 13 points and 15 rebounds. Sandra Lin had another strong game from the point with 11 assists and 2 steals.

With the win, their record now stands at 8-5 overall and 5-1 in the GCAA. The team hits the road for 3 more games to finish out the 2019 portion of their schedule. They will take on Chattahoochee Valley on their home court on December 21 and then play 2 games as part of the South Georgia Tech Classic on December 29-30. Chargers Win Fifth Straight Game

The Charger Men were looking to extend their season-high four-game winning streak on Saturday at the Corral. This would also serve as the team's last home game of 2019.

The Chargers jumped out to a 9-0 lead to start the game and never looked back. Riding 60% shooting and 7-13 from three-point range, the Chargers built a 30-point lead at the half, 67-37. The second half saw the Chargers pull out to a 40-point lead at one point before cruising to a 116-79 victory.

After playing their fourth prep school in a row, Coach Merritt is ready to wrap up 2019 and get into their GCAA conference schedule in 2020. "While games like this allow us to get everyone some playing time, they are not a good measure of what we will face when the conference schedule begins. Those games are always tough and we need to get focused and ready for the challenge."

The Chargers had five players in double figures, led by Carl Johnson and Taj Fraley with 21 each. Desean Ware had 17 points, include 5 three-pointers. Trevin Wade added 14 points and 6 boards, while Langston Wilson had a strong night on the glass with a game-high 9 rebounds.

The Chargers improve to 8-4 on the season. The team hits the road for a game against Roane State in Harriman, Tennessee on Tuesday, December 17. Make sure to follow GHC Athletics on Facebook (@GHCAthletics) and Twitter (@GHC_Athletics) for updates on these games.
