Opening day is always a special day for baseball players, and this year, the Georgia Highlands Chargers were greeted with sunshine and warm weather to get the season underway. The Chargers hosted LaGrange College on Monday and started the season off on the right foot. "Its always great to put a couple in the win column on opening," remarked head coach Dash O'Neill "but really what is important is how hard these young men have worked to reach this point and how far they have come as a team."
GHC opened with a run in the first inning when Travis Sands drove in Lee Kay with a double to centerfield, and they stayed on the gas all afternoon, scoring 25 runs in the doubleheader. Despite all the offense, the Chargers had to come from behind early in both games against a LaGrange team that had some punch in the lineup.
Travis Sands and Blake Brady led the attack with 5 hits each on the day, while Skylar McPhee and Bryson Horne each hit their first home runs of the season. Ryan Smithson and Zach Forham get credit for the wins and Trace Twardoski collected a save in long relief in game one.
The Chargers are back in action this weekend as they host Chattanooga State in a three game series. First pitch is Friday at 3PM on Field 10 at LakePoint. Saturday's doubleheader will begin at 1PM.
