The Chargers ran their season record out to 19-4 this weekend with a 3 game sweep of the #3 team in the nation, Sinclair College. GHC hosted the Tartan Pride in the first 2 games on Saturday in a rare 18 inning doubleheader, and the Chargers showed they were up top the task of facing a top 5 opponent early.
Sophomore Ethan Underwood held Sinclair scoreless through the first 5 innings while GHC built a quick 6-0 lead. Home runs from Joe Sutton and Trace Twardoski provided most of the firepower, and the Charegrs cruised to a 7-2 victory in game 1.
In the nightcap, freshman righthander Johnny Dow fanned 14 in 8.1 innings while allowing just 1 unearned run on 7 hits. GHC would again use the long ball to score their runs and Joe Sutton hit his second homer of the day deep to left field and Lavoisier Fisher put the game out of reach with his second home run of the season. Jet Kern answered the call in the ninth and struck out the side to convert his 5th save of the season.
On Sunday, the Chargers came out early looking for the sweep, scoring a run in each of the first 4 innings while Jacob Ryan stymied the Tartan Pride bats. Ryan would end up tossing 6 scoreless innings before giving way to Stevie Szucs, Levi Ayers, Ryan Smithson, and Jet Kern who kept Sincalir at bay the rest of the game. Gavin Harmon had 2 hits in the game including an exciting inside the park home run. Joe Sutton added 3 more hits to his hot weekend and drove in 2 runs while Palmer Sapp came through with a big two out double to put the game out of reach.
The Chargers will be back in action on Thursday when they host Grand Rapids in a 1PM doubleheader.
