The Chargers had a quick turnaround following Friday night’s loss to Florida Southwestern, taking the floor against the Vincennes University Trailblazers this afternoon in the consolation game of the Gulf Coast Classic.

As they had the night before, the Chargers found themselves behind early, trailing 14-20 at the end of the first quarter. An evenly-played 2nd quarter resulted in the same 6-point deficit going in to the half, with GHC down 33-39. The 3rd quarter saw Vincennes open an 11-point lead at one point. The Lady Chargers were able to fight back behind strong play from Sasha Shishkina and Jahnaria Brown and trail by only 9 heading into the final quarter of play. Vincennes’s lead held steady for most of the 4th quarter until clutch shooting brought the Chargers to within 3 with 23 seconds remaining and having the ball. Unfortunately, after Jahnaria Brown cut the lead to 1 with about 10 seconds left, the Chargers were forced to foul, Vincennes hit their free-throws to push the lead back to 4 with 4.7 seconds remaining. A 3-point attempt from Ja’Lyn Reese just inside half-court to tie the game was no good at the buzzer. The ladies drop a heartbreaker 83-86.

Sasha Shishkina led the Chargers in scoring with 19 points. She also grabbed 8 rebounds and had 1 steal. Jahnaria Brown rebounded from an off-night on Friday to have 17 points, 8 rebounds, 1 block and 1 steal. Ja’Lyn Reese continued her strong start to the season with 14 points, 9 assista, 3 rebounds, and 6 steals. O’Mariyah Tucker chipped in 11 and Nijeria Jordan rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10 points and 6 rebounds.

The Chargers’ record now stands at 2-2 on the season. The team stays on the road next week. They will open GCAA play by traveling to Griffin, GA to take on Southern Crescent Technical College on Wednesday, November 13 at 5:30PM.
