On Friday the Lady Chargers basketball team was able to accomplish a feat not seen in almost 4 seasons; a victory over conference rival South Georgia Technical College. After a painful 2-point loss in overtime to SGTC on the road Tuesday, the Chargers seemed primed to break through at the Corral on Friday night.

Through the first half, it appeared the game would come down to the final minutes again. The Lady Chargers held 2-point leads at the end of both the 1st (22-20) and 2nd quarters (35-33). However, GHC came out in the 3rd quarter on a tear, outscoring SGTC 23-9 in the quarter to open up a 58-42 lead. They were able to extend the lead to 18 points early in the 4th and then held on for a comfortable 78-64 victory. The fact that the win came on Head Coach Brandan Harrell’s birthday made the win even sweeter.

GHC had balanced scoring from all five starters. Leading the way was O’Mariyah Tucker with 15 points and 15 rebounds (a game-high). Sasha Shishkina had 14 points, including four 3-pointers. Sandra Lin had a solid game from the point with 12 points, 5 assists and a game-high 3 steals. Starters Jashanti Simmons (13 points), and Jada Alston (11 points) rounded out the double-figure scorers for the Lady Chargers.

The win put GHC in a tie atop the GCAA with SGTC for the moment. The teams will meet again in the Corral at 1PM on Saturday, March 6 to wrap-up their season series. The winner of that game will sit atop the GCAA standings alone and have the inside track to the #1 seed in the GCAA tournament that will decide who goes to the NJCAA National Tournament.
