Chargers Softball Face Tough Competition in Florida

Chargers Softball Traveled to Florida to open up the 2022 season. The weekend consisted of six games: two at Lake-Sumter State College, and four games at the Juco Classic Kickoff.

 

Friday's double header versus Lake-Sumter State College ended with Lake-Sumter taking both games. In game one, Charger's offense came out firing in the first inning scoring four runs, but errors in the field proved costly. Final score of game one, 6-8 Lake Sumter. Haley Robinson led the Charger's offense hitting 3-4 at the plate with two singles, a double, and two RBIs. Madison Dennis also went 3-4 at the plate with two doubles and a single. Emma Veitch smacked her first career homerun in game one. Hailey Cronic recorded a double and a single. Kyndal Brown and Taylor Justice both recorded doubles as well.

 

            Maggie Schandera started in the circle for the Chargers throwing four innings allowing five earned runs and seven hits. Grace Ellis came in for relief throwing two innings allowing one earned run, three hits, and recording one strikeout.

 

            Game two versus Lake-Sumter State featured solid offense, but the Chargers struggled defensively. Final score of game two, 8-2. Haley Robinson went 1-3 at the plate with a solo homerun, and Haley Overton was 1-2 with an RBI. Hailey Cronic, Annsely Todd, Katie Traynor, Bradey Tharp, and Malone Aldridge all recorded singles in game two.

 

            Emma Veitch started pitching in game two. Veitch threw two innings allowing one earned run, two hits, and recording one strikeout. Katie Traynor finished the game in the circle throwing three innings. Traynor collected two strikeouts, while allowing three hits and three earned runs.

 

Saturday featured two games as a part of the Juco Kickoff Classic. Game one featured a matchup with Marshalltown Community College. After the Tigers struck first with a run in the top of the first inning, the Charger offense broke out scoring five runs in the bottom of the second, six in the bottom of the third, and three runs in the bottom of the sixth. This offensive effort resulted in a six-inning run rule win for the Chargers, final score 14-6. Haley Robinson smashed a homerun, Madison Dennis legged out a triple, and Malone Aldridge hit two gap shots for doubles. Hailey Cronic went 3-3 at the plate with a double and two singles. Allison Deweese recorded a double and four other Chargers recorded singles in the game.

 

Emma Veitch pitched five innings allowing just three earned runs, six hits, and striking out two of the Tigers. Gracee Ellis Finished the game in the circle. Ellis allowed just one hit and one earned run.

 

Game two of Saturday featured a tough matchup versus Gulf Coast Community College. Maggie Schandera started in the circle throwing two innings and striking out one, Haley Robinson finished the game in the circle collecting a strikeout, and Katie Traynor finished the game in the circle.

 

Malone Aldridge led the offensive front of game two smashing two doubles. Kyndal Brown and Bradey Tharp recorded two hits. Madison Dennis, Haley Robinson, Allison Deweese, Emma Veitch, and Katie Traynor all recorded hits in the game. Final score ended in a 14-5 loss versus Gulf Coast.

 

Sunday's game featured matchups with Indian River State College and Pasco-Hernando State College. Game one versus the Pioneers of Indian River was a low scoring game until the fourth and fifth innings. The Chargers jumped ahead 2-0, and held off the Pioneers until the fourth and fifth. Game one final score ended in a 10-2 loss to Indian River.

 

Versus Indian River, the Chargers recorded seven hits. Madison Dennis went 2-3 with a single and a double. Haley Robinson recorded a single with two RBIs, and Malone Aldridge went 2-2 at the plate with a double and a single. Annsley Todd and Hailey Cronic also recorded singles in game one on Sunday.

 

Emma Veitch started in the circle throwing four innings, allowing just three earned runs, while striking out five of the Pioneers. Katie Traynor came in to finish the game throwing two innings, allowing three earned runs, while striking out one.

 

A lack of adjustments offensively proves costly in game two Versus Pasco-Hernandez, as the Chargers drop game two with a final score of 2-0. Maggie Schandera went the distance in the circle throwing six innings and allowing one earned run.

 

Hailey Cronic went two for three in the circle with two singles. Madison Dennis and Allison Deweese also recorded singles in the game.
